Berlin: Then and Now

So far we have discovered that Maryland's small towns take pride in their heritage and art. Berlin, Maryland is no different.

Last week, Melanie and I ventured out to Berlin for a bit of history and along with a bit of local art. And always, age before beauty so we were off to Germantown. This suburb of Berlin has the privilege to call Charles Albert Tindley their own son.

Born in the mid 1800's, Charles Tindley eventually moved to Philadelphia after the civil war where he became a prominent preacher and songwriter. His most significant song, "I Shall Overcome," is credited by many to be the basis for the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome."

After visiting the church that Tindley attended, we moved on to the Germantown School Community Heritage Center. This site, which is being renovated, was once where the two room schoolhouse for African Americans in the area. The school building still exists, although it was sold to the town and converted to a garage. Soon, it will be renovated to replicate the school that stopped operation in 1962.

After experiencing the rich cultural history of Berlin, Melanie and I decided to return. Every second Friday, Berlin has an Art Stroll, and we figured this was a better time than any to visit this quiet little town.

We started the night off at the Globe, where there was an exhibit of local photography and painting, not to mention wings on special. We dined on our battered poultry treats and perused the art in the restaurant's upstairs-gallery.

Once we were finished our meal and beer, we headed across the street to the newly-opened gallery and workspace of Patrick Henry. He boasts amazing selection of oil paintings in this space that will be open during these special events.

So, if you ever find yourself in or around Berlin, Maryland, keep in mind the wonderful art scene that can be found not only on the second Friday of the month, and the history that surrounds and emanates from the city.

I'm so pleased to see that Mr. Henry's gallery is open. I tried to go there over a year ago, but discovered that it was undergoing renovation. There is an extraordinary portrait of his at the home of a friend of mine (his cousin actually) that inspired me to drive to Berlin with my husband to see his work. We will definitely head that way again before Fall.
