Delaware’s Dunes: Keeping It All Together
DATE: Saturday, July 25 - 2009
TIME: 10 – 11:30 a.m.
We have all noticed those green and white signs telling people to stay off the dunes, but did you ever stop and wonder why? Sand dunes are our first line of defense when it comes to coastal storms. The glue that holds those dunes together and keeps the ocean from our doors is a network of very hardy, yet very fragile plants! This program will introduce you to some of the common plants that call the sand dunes home. A park naturalist will assist in plant identification, describe some of the plants’ unique adaptations, and explain how plants are our first line of defense when it comes to coastal storms. Call (302) 227-6991 to pre-register and for directions to the meeting site. $3 per person
Terrapin Talk
DATE: Saturday - July 25, 2009
TIME: 2 p.m.
Busy roadways bisecting the park present some major challenges to turtles trying to find a good spot to lay their eggs. Join a naturalist to learn about these fascinating reptiles and their habitat needs. You’ll find out how Delaware State Parks and others are trying to “make way” for these ancient creatures in our park through habitat restoration projects, safe travel corridors, and real “hands on” monitoring projects. See and touch real turtle artifacts, and maybe find a live specimen to see up close! At the conclusion of the program, you may join the naturalist to explore some nesting habitat and look for more nesting terrapins. Participants will meet at the Indian River Life-Saving Station. $3 per person
Lantern Tours
