Get Lost in Lewes
Lewes, Delaware is one of those places that invites a long and lazy day of meandering and discovering; off strolling for a bit, then resting the toes and heels on a bench before walking a bit more. Direction or destination isn't really important when wondering here.
A trip down 2nd Street may land you in Notting Hill Coffee Roastery for a famous Ooey Gooey and a cup of joe. Lunch could come in the form of delicious rockfish sandwich from Striper Bites, or an absurd (as in amazing) surf and turf burrito from Agave. Outside people duck in and out of small boutiques and shops. Perhaps afterward a spot of ice cream from King's to ward of the heavy heat of summer; sweet tooth satisfied while sitting back down on that same park bench for some people watching.
Maybe later, a stroll down the reasonably flat streets to the canal, red-brick and cypress sidings contrasting with the lush foliage. Perhaps hop on the bike and visit the Zwaanendael Museum that commemorates Lewes' Dutch heritage. After, meander back into town, the sun just beginning to set causing the few clouds on the horizon look as though they've been splashed with grape juice, and visit St. Peters Church. With the bikes leaning up against the tall, thick, proud tree, the labyrinth is navigated until the center is reached and then run out. A goldfinch swoops in from a near by garden and finds a perch in the close by bushes.
So start your stroll back to your quaint bed and breakfast, begin the trek by bike back to Rehoboth, or possibly back to Cape Henlopen along the American Discovery Trail, or hop in the car to whatever destination pulls you out of what some have called, "the thinking man's retreat."
