Road Trip: Wrap-up in Dover

Our stay in Dover, Delaware was full of many events from a historic lantern tour to a local bazaar; it was a gambit of events that truly highlighted the gems of this small capital city.

Lantern Tour on the Green

Dover's history involves interesting events such as a murder by chocolate and the overnight ride of Caesar Rodney to Philadelphia to make Delaware the first state...things we did not know about until this telling tour.

As the sun begins to set and the mosquitoes start to come out to play, the costumed guides begin the lantern tour around "The Green" in Dover's downtown, a block off the main street. The guides are knowledgeable and eloquent speakers. They intrigue enough to motivate the crowd through the hazy onslaught of bloodsuckers as they lead the party by candlelight past the historic buildings and landmarks.

Besides the feast we presented for the local bugs, the tour presented not only a glimpse into the history of Dover, but also the start of our great nation.

Pizzadili Winery - 1671 Peach Basket Road; Felton, Delaware

During our travels through Delmarva, we have come across something completely unexpected: vineyards. First, was the visit to Nassau Valley where we scratched the surface of wines' extensive history. Then, more recently we visited Bordeleau right outside of Salisbury. Now we have added yet another stunning Delmarva vineyard to our list.

The beautiful plot of land with vines hanging that goes by Pizzadilli Winery is located in Felton, Delaware. The uniqueness of this vineyard is not only its delicious wine, but also the fact that the wine is only available from the vineyard itself; a great excuse to kick back on the dock and share a bottle.

Spencer's Bazaar

Some events are bizarre and sometimes you can browse a bazaar event. Spencer's Bazaar fills both these requirements and was a perfect end to our stay in Dover.

Besides the delicious Amish-homemade food located in the central hub, this market has everything you could possibly want. Fumbling through the crowded alleyways between tables adorning strange items, you can find knickknacks, old vinyls, toy guns, or even postcards postmarked and written to strangers.

Moving into the center, drawn by the aromas and the sandwiches spotted in everyone's hand, delicious homemade pies, cookies, and pulled pork sandwiches can be found; everything to make for a good midday, lunch...followed by a nice nap.
