Ensuring Ocean City's Well-being

At a recent press conference in Ocean City, Senator Barbara Mikulski brought light to matters concerning policies that would affect the city and the Eastern Shore. The first of those was the placement of $3 million for Ocean City's beach maintenance program. On top of that, Sen. Mikulski pledged to do everything in her power to prevent offshore drilling, much to the joy of those present for this conference.

"This money is an investment to create and protect private sector jobs," Mikulski said. Over the last 20 years, some $45 million tax dollars have gone into Ocean City, and $145 million has been regained in revenue. Preventing offshore drilling is another important part of that protection, Mikulski said. "I've been to Louisiana. I've seen how the people there were so saddened by the oil coming up onto their shore." If a similar oil spill were to happen off the Maryland shore, we already know what the effects would be.

Congressman Frank Kratovil was also present during the conference. "Protecting Ocean City means protecting Maryland's economy," Kratovil said. This is taking into account the vast amount of money made by tourism alone. People from out-of-state come to this town in droves on vacation, and vacationers love to spend. On top of that, Kratovil spoke of the safety concerns in Ocean City as well. "We're not just about protecting the economy, but people as well." 25 years ago, the beach and boardwalk were all but destroyed by a hurricane. With the government's assistance, OC is now looking more pristine than ever.

Delegate Jim Mathias was at the conference to extend his gratitude for the leadership that has kept Ocean City in good working order, and OC Mayor Richard Meehan said in conclusion, "We will continue to protect the beaches so MD can continue to enjoy Ocean City."
