The Eastern Shore AFRAM Festival
It was like a Night at the Apollo during the 2010 Eastern Shore AFRAM Festival in Seaford Delaware as kids displayed their talents for an eager audience. Mildly nervousness at the start didn't prevent the child singers and performers from quickly getting into the groove, delivering stunning acts.
A lot of youth make their way to the AFRAM Festival, which is part of the reason why the community puts so much into making it a worthwhile event, because they want to take the opportunity to educate. With entertainment, food and games all around, this was just the right place to teach youth responsibility and togetherness while having fun. Groups like CASA, a non-profit dedicated to providing a voice for abused or neglected children in the court system, had booths set up around the park to make people aware of who they are. Also available were HIV awareness educators, other social services, and even Delmarva Daylighting, a company producing green alternatives for home-owners. A festival like this one provides a common ground for people to see what's out there.
The AFRAM Festival is about much more than displaying vendors, though. It's about showcasing the African American community and their heritage. It's about unity. Anyone is welcome here, regardless of color or anything else; all you need is a big smile and a friendly attitude. "This is something everyone looks forward to," said Desiree Moore, President of the AFRAM Festival. Executive Director Pat Jones was also very enthusiastic about keeping the event going year-to-year. Seeing the turn-out, it looks as though the festival will be around for ages. Let's hear it for harmony!
