RIDING THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

Riding the 25 miles around the Blackwater Refuge it's hard not to imagine the struggle and dedication that Harriet Tubman went through during the years of the Underground Railroad. The land is covered in high grass and muck, a proper marsh. Biting flies and mosquitoes cling to your legs and your arms, reminding you who's in charge. Though the landscape is utterly beautiful and timeless from the safety of the non-congested road that forms the loop around the refuge, it is clear that any trek through this marsh would be an uncomfortable and tedious trek to freedom.

NASSAU VALLEY VINEYARDS...IN DELAWARE?!

You can't know where you are going if you don't know where you've been and that is exactly what Peg Raley shows in her history-of-wine walkthrough.

Stowed away behind some commercial centers outside of Lewes, Delaware is a most unexpected surprise-- a vineyard. Nassau Valley Vineyards is the first vineyard in Delaware due to the hard work of Peg and her father and remains the state's only award winning one.

Winding around back away from the main roads, the car is first greeted by perfectly aligned rows of saplings. Around the bend, the road opens up to the beautifully rustic edifices next to rows and rows of the vineyards' prize.

OH YES...CHESAPEAKE BAY FARMS ICE CREAM

Chesapeake Bay Farms, Worcester County's only dairy farm, sells delicious hand-dipped ice cream, grass-fed steaks and fresh seafood on the west bound side of route 50.

FARMERS' MARKET MEAL

Since our July 3rd celebration in Snow Hill, being so fun and cute, we decided to return to the town to roam around a bit more. We stopped by the Worcester tourism office right on Market Street downtown and found some cool things to do.

Among our options was the historic downtown walking tour. On our own we were able to stroll around this gorgeous town visiting cool churches and historic houses, all with the help of our handy map supplied by the office.

The Snow Hill Farmers Market, which happens every Tuesday from 2pm to 6pm, was another delightful discovery.

The market here offered the gambit from pet snacks to oysters, and the people behind all the booths were friendly and interesting.

After talking to the vendors and doing some shopping, we took our fresh food home and designed a happy, healthy dinner for ourselves, including fresh oysters from Uncle Ernie's Tangier Sound and home-grown squash. So with out further ado, our meals made of (mostly) food from the Snow Hill Farmers' Market.
