Grab a Rake!

Today, there was lots to do on Assateague Island, from the obvious horse-watching to cycling and watersports. But one thing had families out in numbers wading through the knee-high waters surrounding Assateague Island - Shellfishing! On the Island, you can attend one of the many shellfishing classes being offered this summer, which include a lesson on shellfishing, a demo of what to do and how to do it, and then the most fun part, getting dirty and raking through the sea bed for gems hidden away in their shells.

Riding the Underground Railroad

Riding the 25 miles around the Blackwater Refuge it's hard not to imagine the struggle and dedication that Harriet Tubman went through during the years of the Underground Railroad. The land is covered in high grass and muck, a proper marsh. Biting flies and mosquitoes cling to your legs and your arms, reminding you who's in charge. Though the landscape is utterly beautiful and timeless from the safety of the non-congested road that forms the loop around the refuge, it is clear that any trek through this marsh would be an uncomfortable and tedious trek to freedom.

Road Trip: Day II

Back on the road, after packing up camp, Melanie and I were in search of two valuable commodities... wi-fi and a place to rest our heads for the night.

The first of those was needed (for the obvious reason) to update you kind readers on our travels, so we moved on over to the near by town of Rehoboth. Wi-Fi was found in a cup of coffee from the resident Starbucks, though it wasn't Starbucks internet. (Hint: If you tuck yourself back close to the mall, you can use the mall's internet. It's conveniently free, opposed to AT&T's and Starbucks corporate hold on usage, and it's relatively fast.)

ROAAAD TRIIIP: Day I

The road trip around Delmarva started in the August midday heat; the sun sitting nearly 3 inches from our heads boiling our brains. In order to quell this intense heat, the first stop happened well before our destined peninsula.

Dippy's is one of many small ice cream shops that dot of South Jersey. A tiny parking lot with a few wooden benches sit in front of three or four windows manned by teenagers working for movie money.

The ice cream is creamy and rich, and when mixed with crushed Heath Bar crumbles, it can calm the forces of the atmospheric inferno.

History Lit by Lantern

Every Wednesday and Saturday, Fort Miles in Cape Henlopen State Park can be toured by lantern.

After an hour description of the on-goings of the area during World War II, the group heads out to the battery down the road and up the Great Dune.

Inside the battery, the air seems blank; air is cool, crisp and clean. Constantly 62 degrees Fahrenheit and dry as a hospital. This is, it was explained, what soldiers would have felt. Humidity or heat and the tons and tons of gun powder and shells that sat in the now vacant, naked, cold concrete rooms.

The tour finalizes with the revelation of the main attraction...that you will just have to see for yourself
