The Coast Gets a Taste Test

We left the Taste of Coastal Delaware event with full bellies and grins on our faces! Between the amazing delicious dishes and friendly down-to-earth service, you could say we were cared for quite well! It was a fine day of taste-testing for all who attended, and there was even live music by Paul Collen (formerly of "Bad Company").

This was the 11th annual event of its kind, held by the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce, featuring well over a dozen restaurants who host their operations right here on the coast of southern Delaware. These were all local businesses, no chains involved, which means you must head out to Bethany Beach to try them for yourselves. In other words: be there or be square! Most of the featured restaurants acquire their produce and supplies from local growers and markets, so supporting them has a broader positive impact on the local economy. The BFACC also gave out two awards: one went to Fenwick Crab House for Best Dish, the other went to Cottage Cafe for the Best Display, so congrats to those two!

Here are some more details on the restaurants we tried:

Some BBQ, anyone?

Smoker's BBQ Pit has the kind of menu that makes you want to try everything. We rolled into this place not long after losing half our breakfast on the car floor (that loss being the result of an over-enthusiastic application of the brake-pedal). Needless to say, Smoker's selection was more than welcome. They had your beef sandwiches, pulled pork, whole chickens... all the basic essentials for "topping off the tanks". For Errol, the choice was easy: baby-back ribs. To find out more about Smoker's BBQ Pit, click here.

Road Trip: Wrap-up in Dover

Our stay in Dover, Delaware was full of many events from a historic lantern tour to a local bazaar; it was a gambit of events that truly highlighted the gems of this small capital city.

Lantern Tour on the Green

Dover's history involves interesting events such as a murder by chocolate and the overnight ride of Caesar Rodney to Philadelphia to make Delaware the first state...things we did not know about until this telling tour.

Road Trip: Day 7, Island by the name of Smith

Off the coast of Maryland, deep in the waters of the Chesapeake, sits an island that goes by the name of Smith. Accessible only by ferry, this place is a reminder of the life of fishermen's days gone by.

Broken down and abandoned crab and fishery shacks pop up along the marshes that surround the villages of Tylerton, Ewell, and Rhodes Point; graying wood and collapsed ceilings, with pelicans and seagulls perched on the pylons that were once docks or fishing piers.

Road Trip: Day 4, Wacha-Prauge? and Good Samaritans

Leaving Salisbury, Maryland, Melanie and I aimed the Volvo due south for the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula with hopes of dipping our toes in Chesapeake right where it meets the great Atlantic.

Route 13 is one of the must-use arteries running down Virginia's Eastern Shore. Shooting straight down the spine of the area that's only five miles at it's widest point, this little highway connects the small towns and villages that dot this fairly-untouched land.
