Road Trip: Weekend

The morning dew sat thick on the car and the soil when the sun rose on the Eastern Shore on Sunday. Hurricane Bill was flooding the airwaves with promises of killer waves and tumultuous seas. So the decision was made; it was mandatory to witness the mayhem first hand. To get to the destination in mind, one must take some sort of water craft, be it a motor boat, jet ski, or, in our case, kayaks.

In what could be describe as a floating caravan, six of us put in somewhere near Daugherty, Virginia and began the beautiful hour paddle through the pristine salt marshes, down Folly's creek towards Cedar Island in hopes of great tempest waves, but instead what we found was a much needed day or serenity and tranquility.

Road Trip: Day 4, Wacha-Prauge? and Good Samaritans

Leaving Salisbury, Maryland, Melanie and I aimed the Volvo due south for the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula with hopes of dipping our toes in Chesapeake right where it meets the great Atlantic.

Route 13 is one of the must-use arteries running down Virginia's Eastern Shore. Shooting straight down the spine of the area that's only five miles at it's widest point, this little highway connects the small towns and villages that dot this fairly-untouched land.

Road Trip: Day III, Wicomico Red and a Flat Tire

With the weather sweltering hot, and dehydration threatening to rear its ugly head, we decided the best remedy is to ride our bikes ten miles one way in order to drink some wine at the Bordaleau Winery just outside of Salisbury, Maryland.

The ride was beautiful, especially with the brilliant sunshine, but the roads weren't so friendly. As you move through Salisbury, past the university (which offers great scenery with its large brick buildings and manicured lawns) there are plenty of sidewalks. However, soon after the school the sidewalks vanish along with any glimmer of shoulder; it is simply you and the oncoming traffic.

Road Trip: Day II

Back on the road, after packing up camp, Melanie and I were in search of two valuable commodities... wi-fi and a place to rest our heads for the night.

The first of those was needed (for the obvious reason) to update you kind readers on our travels, so we moved on over to the near by town of Rehoboth. Wi-Fi was found in a cup of coffee from the resident Starbucks, though it wasn't Starbucks internet. (Hint: If you tuck yourself back close to the mall, you can use the mall's internet. It's conveniently free, opposed to AT&T's and Starbucks corporate hold on usage, and it's relatively fast.)

ROAAAD TRIIIP: Day I

The road trip around Delmarva started in the August midday heat; the sun sitting nearly 3 inches from our heads boiling our brains. In order to quell this intense heat, the first stop happened well before our destined peninsula.

Dippy's is one of many small ice cream shops that dot of South Jersey. A tiny parking lot with a few wooden benches sit in front of three or four windows manned by teenagers working for movie money.

The ice cream is creamy and rich, and when mixed with crushed Heath Bar crumbles, it can calm the forces of the atmospheric inferno.
