Oil Paintings and Show Tunes

Everyone in Snow Hill was talking with unbridled excitement as Friday, August 6th drew near. First Friday, they called it, an ongoing event of culture and carousing. When the awaited day arrived, Market Street became the ideal Victorian-style deviation from commercialism to class, as shopkeepers, visitors and residents alike cavort between wine-tastings, art galleries and music. This time, we got our fair share of remarkable artwork by Kenneth Browne and singing waiters at The Blue Dog Café.

The Biggest Catch

This week, all boats dock in Ocean City for the 37th Annual White Marlin Open. Over the past couple days, crowds feasted their eyes on some of the biggest billfish caught in the Open, including a mammoth 1010.5lb Blue Marlin caught on day 2. The White Marlin open continues for a few more days, so keep up with with what's new by checking out their leaderboard.

Nights on the Beach

Soft sweet treats crackle over the open fire at sundown on the sands of Dewey. The town hosts bonfires every Wednesday from 7 to 11 PM, and the event is FREE. Bring your fold-out chairs, blankets, and especially glow sticks for an evening of family fun. And what is a bonfire without roasting marshmallows? If you forget to bring any, vendors will be available to provide you with marshmallows and drinks. So get ready for an evening on the sand!

And if you feel like catching a free movie, Dewey also hosts Monday night movies on the beach! It's like a drive-in movie from your beach chair. Doesn't get much better than that!

Crabs and Clams for Everyone!

Governor Martin O'Malley received a warm welcome at the 34th Annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake in Crisfield, Maryland. This event was an "outdoor all-you-can-eat affair featuring crabs, clams, fish, corn on the cob, and watermelon, and in election years, lots of politicians." It just so happens that this year is an election year, and the fans and supporters lined the gates awaiting the arrival of their heroes. Over the years, this event has become a major site for old-fashioned "baby-kissing" politics. Campaigners - from congress to governor (as you can see above) - make themselves available for conversation with locals, who are free to speak their minds. Questions, praises, criticisms, all were welcome here. For a politician, showing face at the Crab Bake is a strong gesture saying "I'm willing to hear what you have to say." As for candidates who don't show, they probably aren't going to be elected in this district.

A Riverwide Search

Today we went down to Snow Hill, MD, and joined Kim Klump for an event on the Pocomoke River. People gathered around to dip their paddles in the water for a scavenger hunt by boat. Canoes and kayaks cut loose as the participants scoured the banks and reeds for little fishing-bobbers containing prizes like tickets for free ice cream and other goodies. Errol and Erik didn't find any, sadly, though Erik did get to drive a motorboat for the first time while Errol took pictures from on-board.
