West of Dover, DE is an area where two worlds meet and coexist: the world of the average American - the secular - and that of the Amish. Despite the marked differences between the two cultures, secular folk (or "English," as the Amish like to call us) are welcome to tour throughout the Amish countryside, which is now the location of a favored bike trail. The Amish are also open to commerce, and we were invited along the road to see what they had to offer.

This time, it isn't Johnny Depp you're seeing aboard the ship... it's Host Our Coast! Chestertown, MD allowed us the rare opportunity to go for a sailing adventure aboard the Sultana, a reproduction of an 18th century schooner. The crew even managed to put us to work, fancy that! Hauling line, manning the tiller, and taking orders definitely made for a vivid experience aboard one of the finest historic sailing ships on the eastern shore.

If the colonial ships and serene towns like Rock Hall aren't enough, you can find plenty more things to do in Kent County, MD here.

Walking the Streets of Newark

You've already seen the fun we had in Newark by night, but unlike the nocturnal college crowd who partied with us, we actually did spend time on Main Street by day as well. After a good rest, Errol and I went for a sunshine promenade to see what we would find. Our first stop, as per one of my weaknesses, was Aunt Margaret's Antique Mall.

Stepping up to the plate we have the Blue Rocks, Minor League baseball team of Wilmington, facing off with the Philadelphia Eagles. From left field to right, the stadium resounded with fans cheering for the home team. Going to the game, getting a beer (they had Dogfish Head!), that's the way to kick back.

The suspension you're seeing in this beer is characteristic of a Black and Tan at Stewart's. The golden ale at the bottom is not fully fermented, having more viscosity than the dark stout which has more alcohol and floats on top. Served with frothing pride, this is one of the many beers made at Stewart's Brewing Co., another brew-pub along Delaware's famous Wine & Ale Trail.

Environmental Education In Wilmington

Former Delaware governor Russell Peterson had a dream, and after years of hard work that dream is now a reality called the DuPont Environmental Education Center. The Center is a crossroad both literal and figurative. It is at the intersection point of I95 and several other highways in Wilmington DE, and it is the meeting place between the natural environment and human artifice. "It's a great place, and people are discovering it everyday," said Catherin Coin, wife of Greg Coin, a writer for the Examiner. The DEEC proves that people don't always need to drive out of town for a half-hour to find a calm, contemplative area where they can unwind and enjoy the company of the marsh-grass and birds.

Turning Kids Into Fly Fishing Experts

Ashland Nature Center in Wilmington, DE is a great place to learn outdoor sports like fishing. This time around the kids are getting their turn at the Fun With Fishing kid's camp, where youngsters are taught the ins and outs of fly fishing. In a quiet forest clearing along the Brandywine Creek, Derek Stoner reminds his pupils how to tie the proper knot that will secure a fly to the leader. Flies are more delicate than the lures used in most other types of fishing, being made to imitate different insects and tiny crustaceans that swim through the water.

It shows off confidence, I suppose. But then you have weirdoes like me who love to sample, ordering a different beer every night. This week, Errol and I went to Iron Hill Brewery in Newark, DE, where we met another guy who loves to switch around his beer choices just as much.

This year especially the heat was on for Dewey, having several home-town boarders in the semi-finals. It was an event no one wanted to miss. It was like a Night at the Apollo during the 2010 Eastern Shore AFRAM Festival in Seaford Delaware as kids displayed their talents for an eager audience. Mildly nervousness at the start didn't prevent the child singers and performers from quickly getting into the groove, delivering stunning acts.

Millsboro's Cultural Festival

Sharing their age-old traditions, the Nanticoke Dancers strutted and twirled their regalia at the Big Thursday Festival in Millsboro. This weekend was all about bringing the festival atmosphere back to Millsboro, providing all sorts of activities for families and children in Cupola Park. "People are really busy these days," said Dave Jones, President of the GMCC. "It's good to remind them to slow things down and relax." It also allowed for community organizations to get together and show people they're working hard for the town.
